Actinic Keratosis

A rough, scaly patch, bump or reddish spot on areas of the skin often exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, neck, hands and forearms.

Actinic Keratosis is one of the most common skin conditions we treat at Art of Dermatology. It is also known as solar keratosis due to prolonged exposure to the sun, tanning beds or sunlamps, actinic keratosis is a precancerous skin growth that appears as a red, pink or brown spot on the skin's surface.

These spots appear on the sun-exposed areas of the face, lips, ears, neck, hands, arms and shoulders. This condition is common and typically affects adults due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light. You can limit your risk of developing actinic keratosis by minimizing your exposure to the sun and protecting your skin from UV rays. And while we know the sun is fun, it can also be harmful.

How is it treated?

If untreated, Actinic keratoses may develop into a skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. We commonly remove these growths through a freezing treatment, with topical medicated creams, or topical medicated gels.
