Rashes

Rashes are patches of skin that are abnormal in color or texture and can look bumpy, scaly, or swollen. Caused by psychological and environmental factors, they can bring about itchiness or pain.

Rashes cause changes in the skin's color, texture or feel that may cause irritation or swelling. They are caused by various psychological factors (depression, anxiety, fear, a catastrophic event) and/or environmental factors (air pollution, food carcinogens, pesticides, lead and even prolonged computer screen time).

Rashes can also be associated with many conditions including chickenpox, contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, ringworm, and shingles. Recently, some patients have experienced rashes associated with coronavirus infection.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the type or cause of the rash. We can approach treatment with medicated creams, topical anti-itch lotions (hydrocortisone), moisturizers, topical anti-fungal creams, oral medications or oral antihistamines and light therapy.

While some rashes are more uncomfortable than they are dangerous, others can be a sign of a more serious condition.
