Seborrheic Dermatitis

A common skin condition that causes a scaly rash on oily areas of the body like the face and scalp.

Seborrheic dermatitis causes scaly patches of inflamed skin, most typically seen on the scalp. The rash can look pink, purple or lighter than the surrounding skin and often appears raised. It can also cause stubborn dandruff.

While irritating, it is not contagious and doesn't cause permanent hair loss. It can also affect oily areas of the body, such as the face, nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids and chest. The signs and symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis tend to flare with stress, fatigue or seasonal changes. In infants, this condition is also known as “cradle cap.”

How is it treated?

While there, unfortunately, isn't a cure for seborrheic dermatitis, our team can effectively diagnose and treat your condition with medicated shampoos to help alleviate symptoms like itching and lessen and/or clear the rash entirely. We can also apply a prescription-strength corticosteroid cream, foam, ointment or oil on the scalp or affected areas.

With seborrheic dermatitis, it's recommended that treatment is received as soon as possible to avoid thickening of the scale or potential infection.
